SPT Labtech has an exciting opportunity for a MEMS Process Engineer. You will help develop and scale up processes for the fabrication of Cryo-EM consumables leading the revolution in the imaging of 3D structures of biomacromolecules.

The position will mostly be based on our site in Melbourn, while occasionally working in our laboratory facility at Cambridge University (and collaborating with our colleagues in Germany). The role requires excellent interpersonal skills, technical expertise and a strong appetite to learn.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Run and improve wafer fab processes such as thin-film metal deposition, wet etch, electro-forming, and photolithography.
  • Use and run wafer metrology tools to analyse problems, failures, and other technical issues.
  • Use good problem solving and communication skills to help solve a wide array of technical product problems.
  • Develop and oversee processes/controls to ensure delivered products meet commercial quality requirements.
  • Work closely with the supply chain managers to ensure grid production capacity matches forecast demand.
  • Work in close collaboration with the development team to balance the demands of development and production on the shared cleanroom resources.
  • Ensure full compliance with EHSQ standards, cleanroom controls, sanitation, and safety procedures.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems with a range of processing equipment
  • Organise the routine maintenance and repair of the cleanroom machinery and equipment.

  • Resilience & Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities; able to balance short-term production needs with long-term development objectives.
  • Organisational Skills: Highly structured and proactive in planning, prioritising, and resource allocation.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a cleanroom or highly regulated production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and maintaining technical equipment.
  • Familiarity with EHSQ requirements and cleanroom protocols.
  • Relevant experience in some of the following: thin-film deposition techniques, semiconductor processes, photolithography, wet etching, microfabrication, MEMS. 

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated track record in leading production or operations teams, ideally in a scientific or technical manufacturing setting.
  • Strong understanding of production planning, capacity management, and supply chain interfaces.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen).
