The Role
The Data Governance Analysts plays a hands-on, delivery-focused role in operationalising Pepperstone's Data Governance Framework and Data Quality Framework across Pepperstone. The role is the connective tissue between governance policy and platform execution, translating principles into tagged, classified, well-described and measurably trusted Data Products and Assets across the business.
Using Alation as our governance toolset, the role is responsible for cataloguing and classifying Data Products and Assets, authoring and operationalising semantic Data Quality tests, scheduling and configuring DQ reports, and coordinating the end-to-end resolution of identified Data Quality issues. The role also owns the day-to-day mechanics of Data Product Lifecycle management and review, ensuring our data estate remains fit-for-purpose, compliant and discoverable as it evolves.
The Value Proposition of the role is to lift the trustworthiness, transparency and reusability of Pepperstone's data, directly enabling faster, safer, data-driven decisions across Trading, Risk, Finance, Compliance, Marketing and Client Services in a highly regulated, fast-moving financial services environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to operationalising the Data Governance Framework turning actionable policies, processes, procedures and standards into executed evidenced activity in Alation.
- Evaluate opportunities and make recommendations for embedding Data Governance practices within IT teams and across the organisation.
- Use Alation to tag and classify Data Products and Assets (including sensitivity, criticality, ownership, domain, jurisdiction and regulatory context), ensuring consistency with Pepperstone's data classification, privacy and retention standards.
- Curate and maintain the Enterprise Business Glossary, lineage, and stewardship workflows in Alation so business and technical users can discover, understand and trust our data.
- Drive adoption of governance practices and tooling across Data Stewards, engineering teams and business stakeholders.
- Operationalise the Data Quality Framework by designing, authoring and maintaining semantic Data Quality tests in Alation
- Schedule, configure and tune DQ test execution and reporting on Alation, including run cadence, thresholds, alerting and stakeholder-facing DQ reports and dashboards.
- Maintain a clear view of open DQ issues, their business impact, root cause and remediation status, and report on trends to the Data Governance & Enablement Manager and broader stakeholders.
- Coordinate the end-to-end resolution of Data Quality issues identified through DQ test results, stakeholder reports or audits — triaging, prioritising, assigning to the appropriate Data Owners / Stewards / engineering teams, and tracking through to closure.
- Identify gaps in Data Governance coverage, classification or quality and drive remediation in collaboration with Data Engineering and the relevant business domains.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Data Governance policies, processes, procedures and standards across the relevant jurisdictions in which Pepperstone operates.
- Evaluate opportunities and make recommendations for embedding Data Governance practices within Technology teams and across the organisation.
- Assist the Enterprise Data team in implementing and maintaining tools and processes to ensure compliance with data obligations across jurisdictions.
- Contribute to internal and external audits as required, providing evidence of governance and quality controls operating on the Enterprise Data Platform.
- Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to gather and analyse data requirements, ensuring solutions align with business and data governance objectives.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive, consistent documentation for information models, data flows, data dictionaries, the Enterprise Business Glossary and other data artefacts, aligned to industry standards and scalable to business needs.
- Present data artefacts and insights to stakeholders, explaining complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Perform other responsibilities and duties periodically assigned by the manager to meet reasonable operational and/or other requirements.
The role reports to the Data Governance & Enablement Manager in Enterprise Data based in Melbourne.
We support flexible working. This position can be performed from both a mix of at our office and from home. Your manager will share details and expectations of your team’s regular cadence of working locations.
About you
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in data management roles preferably in Financial Services, FX/CFD or FinTech with an understanding of the regulatory and operational risk context typical of regulated brokers.
- 3+ years' experience in a specialist Data Governance role and/ or Data Quality role
- Solid understanding of DAMA DMBoK principles or any other relevant data frameworks (i.e. DCAM), and industry best practices.
- Knowledge of global regulatory and compliance frameworks commonly used the in financial services sector (i.e. GDPR, NIST, Australian Privacy Act).
- Demonstrated understanding of data governance principles, frameworks, and operating models (data ownership. Stewardship, and accountability models)
- Demonstrated experience developing robust data policies, standards, processes and procedures, and translating complex regulatory, compliance and business requirements into clear, actionable artefacts.
- Familiarity with data retention, data quality, data privacy and data classification implementations.
- Proficiency in SQL and strong understanding of metadata management for data modelling.
- Hands-on experience with Alation (i.e. catalogue configuration, classification, tagging of Data Products and Assets, stewardship workflows, business glossary management and lineage).
- Exposure to authoring Semantic Data Quality tests/rules in Alation, configuring Data Quality Dashboards and co-ordinating the Data Quality Resolution activities.
- Exposure to Data Product /Data Mesh Operating models and Data Contracts.
- Exposure to contemporary cloud data-management technology (preferably AWS).
- Experience designing and delivering data capability uplift programs, including governance and data literacy training, with measurable improvement in data understanding, adoption, and compliance behaviours across business teams.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and facilitating workshops with diverse audiences.
- Pragmatic and solutions‑oriented professional with strong ownership and accountability, able to operate effectively in ambiguity while demonstrating excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
