CDL-A Heavy Equipment Response Technician

Location: Taneytown, MD
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Pay Rate: Starting at $26.00/hour+ (based on experience)

Position Summary

We are seeking experienced CDL-A professionals to join a specialized field operations team supporting railroad recovery projects, heavy equipment transport, and infrastructure-related work throughout the region.

This position combines commercial driving responsibilities with hands-on field support and equipment operation. Team members assist with emergency response activities, equipment mobilization, track-related projects, railcar support services, and material transfer operations. Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors in changing conditions and responding to urgent service calls when needed.

This is a full-time direct hire position offering competitive pay, extensive overtime opportunities, travel-related compensation, and company-sponsored benefits.

Work Schedule

  • Guaranteed minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Consistent overtime opportunities available (often exceeding 60 hours weekly)
  • On-call availability required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Must be available for emergency response assignments, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Compensation Details

  • Starting wage of $26.00 per hour or higher based on experience
  • Overtime paid at 1.5 times the regular rate for work performed outside Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM
  • Per diem provided for qualifying travel assignments
  • Hotel accommodations covered during overnight travel
  • Layover compensation available when applicable

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of commercial vehicles, trailers, and equipment
  • Safely transport equipment, machinery, and materials to and from project locations
  • Inspect loads for proper securement and compliance with transportation requirements
  • Verify permits and documentation associated with oversized and overweight loads
  • Participate in daily planning meetings and safety briefings
  • Assist with mobilization, setup, and staging of equipment and materials
  • Load and unload equipment required for recovery, maintenance, and construction activities
  • Support material transfers and infrastructure-related work assignments
  • Assist with project closeout activities, including cleanup and securing equipment for transport
  • Assist with assembly, inspection, setup, and operation of cranes and specialty equipment
  • Support rigging activities utilizing chains, cables, slings, and winches
  • Operate heavy equipment when qualified, including:
    • Cranes
    • Excavators
    • Backhoes
    • Grapple trucks
    • Dump trucks
    • Additional construction and lifting equipment
    • Perform work safely while maintaining awareness of surrounding personnel and equipment
    • Maintenance & Readiness

      • Monitor vehicle and equipment performance to maintain operational readiness
      • Perform routine maintenance and minor service tasks
      • Document maintenance activities and communicate repair needs to management
      • Assist with equipment teardown, loading, and transport after project completion
      • Restock vehicles and equipment with necessary tools, parts, and supplies
      • Organize and properly dispose of or store scrap and reusable materials

      • Follow all company safety requirements and operating procedures
      • Maintain organized vehicles, equipment, and work areas
      • Demonstrate flexibility by supporting additional operational needs when required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A)
  • Good driving record
  • Previous experience performing physical labor in construction, industrial, transportation, or related environments
  • Ability to successfully complete required training, certification, and qualification programs
  • Availability to respond to emergency callouts at any time, including weekends and holidays

Preferred Experience

  • Three or more years of heavy equipment operating experience
  • Experience operating machinery such as:
    • Excavators
    • Bulldozers
    • Backhoes
    • Front-end loaders
    • Grapple trucks
    • Tractors
    • Skid steer loaders
    • Rail-related equipment
    • Equivalent combinations of training and hands-on experience will be considered
