Role Overview

Device Software Lead — Shape How the World Builds on Embedded Linux

Toradex · Horw, Switzerland · Hybrid (Onsite + 1–2 days remote after onboarding)

Toradex makes embedded computing modules that power products across industrial automation, medical devices, robotics, and beyond. We're looking for a Device Software Lead who can do something harder than writing great embedded Linux code: make the entire platform easier for others to build on, while keeping it robust, secure, and maintainable long-term.
You'll own the architectural direction of our device software platform, lead a team of embedded engineers, and work directly with customers and product teams to understand where the platform needs to go next. Your biggest impact will be in the decisions you make, the clarity you bring, and the engineers you grow.

This role asks you to hold two things at once:

Architectural clarity — knowing how to draw the right boundaries between BSPs, Yocto layers, reference images, and platform features so the system stays maintainable as it scales.
Customer judgment — understanding how a real engineer at a customer company experiences your platform, where they get stuck, and what would unlock the next stage of their product.

If you've spent your career entirely heads-down in the build system, this probably isn't the right fit. If you've found yourself drawn to why the platform is structured the way it is, and how it could work better for the people using it — keep reading.

What You'll Do
  • Own the platform architecture — Define how BSPs, Yocto layers, distros, and reference images fit together. Identify where complexity is accidental versus necessary, and act on it.
  • Be the customer's technical advocate — Engage with customers beyond support tickets: understand what's blocking them, and bring that signal back into platform decisions.
  • Lead and grow the team — Mentor engineers at different levels, help them make better architectural decisions, and build a culture of ownership and engineering excellence.
  • Drive cross-functional strategy — Shape release strategy and long-term platform direction alongside BSP, security, CI, and product teams.
  • Represent Toradex externally — Share knowledge through technical writing, webinars, and customer engagement.
What We're Looking For

The strongest candidates will have owned architectural decisions on an embedded Linux platform, worked directly with customers to understand real-world impact, and led or mentored engineers with demonstrable outcomes. Strong practical Yocto/OpenEmbedded expertise across BSPs, kernel configuration, and bootloaders is essential, along with experience in platform security, connectivity, or long-lived system maintainability.

The judgment we're really hiring for: you can tell the difference between complexity that serves users and complexity that serves the implementation. You know how to hold a technical position with experienced, opinionated colleagues — and when to update it.
Helpful but not required: open-source contributions, industrial/medical/automotive embedded background, technical writing or conference speaking, embedded CI experience.

What We Offer

A high-impact role with real ownership, direct customer exposure, a strong engineering team to lead, hybrid flexibility in central Switzerland, and genuine opportunities for external visibility in the embedded Linux community.

A Note on Seniority

Candidates who combine deep embedded Linux expertise with architectural and customer-facing experience are rare. If you're slightly earlier in your career but have meaningful signals in both directions, we'd rather hear from you than not.
